The Churchill School and Center
New York, New York
HEAD OF SCHOOL
July 1, 2008
The
Churchill School and Center is a leading educational institution of national
prominence with a double mission: to
educate students with learning differences and to provide outreach services to
other students, schools and educators. Since
1972 The Churchill School has been committed to helping students with learning
disabilities acquire the basic skills and self-confidence necessary for academic
success. The Churchill Center,
through its outreach programs and services, is a source of information,
counseling and support to parents, students and professionals in the learning
disabilities community. After a
thirty-five year history of leadership in the field of learning disabilities,
and with a recently completed strategic plan, Churchill’s vision is broad and
bold.
The
Churchill School is chartered by the Board of Regents for the State of New York
and accredited by the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS)
as a K – 12 independent, not-for-profit, coeducational day school, offering a
comprehensive education for 400 students with average to above average
intelligence. Churchill is also on
the State Education List of approved, non-public schools and can therefore
enroll special education students referred by local school districts, creating a
diverse population. More than 90
percent of Churchill students are “funded” by their Boards of Education.
Located
in a state of the art, seven-story facility in the Murray Hill section of
Manhattan, Churchill’s admissions are competitive, and the school draws
students from the five boroughs and the tri-state area.
The program is well rounded, including a commitment to academic
excellence and incorporating technology, the arts, athletics and an array of
extracurricular activities. Graduates matriculate at four year colleges and other
post-secondary institutions.
The
head of The Churchill School and Center supervises a staff of more than 150
highly qualified professionals – learning specialists, masters-trained
state-certified head teachers, and a talented staff of specialists in a host of
related services. There is a
sophisticated administrative infrastructure to meet the demands of the school
– three division heads, directors of finance, development, admissions,
building maintenance, and security, as well as the Director of the Center.
There
is a strong sense of community at Churchill due to an actively engaged Board of
Trustees and an involved parent body. With a balanced operating budget of $12
million, the school is in an ideal position to continue its prominence in the
field. The school raises $1.6
million in annual giving.
