Strategic Planning
A primary responsibility of any board of trustees is to plan
strategically for the long-term needs of the institution.
The consultant works with a core group of trustees to
oversee an inclusive process that engages the entire
community in examining the school’s mission and
charting direction for the future. The process, which
can be as short as a weekend or as extended as a school
year, often begins with a day-long retreat where school
leaders, administrators and trustees review the school’s
mission (which is the foundation of all planning) and
brainstorm a vision for the future. Issues often cluster
under such headings as:
- leadership
- personnel
- program
- plant
- governance
- finance
- constituency relations
- enrollment
- marketing
- development

Task forces, formed with broad inclusive membership,
work to articulate the vision, goals and strategies that
ultimately become the final plan. The consultant works
closely with the core planning group to monitor the
process, keep the task forces focused, and arbitrate
conflicting issues.
The end result is a comprehensive document that
provides a five-year roadmap for annual
implementation. (Learn
