Head Search Highlights
As a consultant Gregory Floyd has worked with some 250 independent
schools, providing a broad base for building a candidate pool and a deep
insight into the merits of each candidate. The following facts are
noteworthy:
Approximately 130 head positions have been filled in the last 20 years.
Schools have included all types nationwide: Hawaii to Maine, coed and
single-sex, secular and religiously affiliated, elementary, secondary,
K-12, large and small (from twenty students to one thousand).
Ninety-five percent of the heads appointed have had successful tenures.
The process in each case is tailored to meet the particular culture of the
client school and takes into account the size and configuration of the
search committee.
Active involvement is provided throughout the process, attending
interviews and assisting with background checks.
Clients are carefully selected so that no two schools will be so similar
in profile as to generate overlapping candidate pools.
No search has reopened because of a lack of promising candidates, nor has
any interim head been appointed by default.
One-third of all appointments have been women; one-third were sitting
heads of school.
Candidates are drawn from independent and public schools, universities,
and other non-profits.
After the search Gregory Floyd has continued to work with many client
schools on governance issues, planning, strategic goal-setting, retreats,
and as an informal outside resource.
An in-depth, objective assessment of the client school is essential for a
successful search and sets the stage for a long-term tenure.
